Q: I want to change my career and acquire a new job but need help with identifying what it is that I want. How will a Coaching benefit me?
A: A Life Coach looks at where you want to be and your values to establish which job roles fulfil your values and requirements. We also aim to establish through questioning techniques and exercises, just what you are good at, by examining what your hobbies and interests are so that we can coach you towards suitable roles. In addition, we aim to find out where your passion lies as this is often the key to bringing about positive changes.

Q. I want a totally new career opportunity as I have found that continually complaining to friends and family is not going to change my situation; so how can Coaching help me to achieve my career development goals?
A: A Life Coach like friends and family should be a good listener. They stay attuned to what the client is saying as well as ascertaining their career aspiration and challenge the very things that hold them back from accomplishing change. Where the two differ is that a Life Coach is objective and can offer exercises and specific questions tailored to the client’s particular situation so that by the end of the session an action plan is devised for the client to work towards their goal.

Q: I’m contemplating hiring a Life Coach however I need to be assured that they are going to help me meet my objective or else I’ll be wasting my hard earned money.
A. Good point. A Life Coach should look at where you are in your life now and what you would like to achieve by the time the session(s) are completed. Of course, a client has to commit 100% to the coaching sessions and complete the action plan devised in order for positive changes to occur but a good Life Coach should have measurable goals to see how the client is performing each week. Personally speaking, I use SMART Goals as a measure of how far a client has reached and achieved. These goals are devised with the client and clearly define what the client wants to achieve by a specified timescale. If a client feels that they have not benefitted from a particular session(s) then he/she should inform their Life Coach straight away so that any issues can be resolved. Personally speaking, I offer a 100% money back guarantee should the client feel dissatisfied with their session(s).

Q: I’m a white collar worker who has recently been laid off. Not only do I feel low but I’ve been to employment agencies and I’m still unable to find a job despite completing numerous job applications and sending out my CV. How is Life Coaching going to help me get a job?
A. Life Coaching looks at your existing skills to see what career opportunities are available which will utilise your skills and experience. Why? Given the recession and economic downturn many industries are downsizing and outsourcing work and if your sector is one of them then this may explain why you may be having difficulty acquiring a similar role. Life Coaching can help you put your skills to use in a different field and open your eyes to new possibilities you had not considered before.
How can you find out if it is for you? Find a Qualified Life Coach who specialises in your requirement area andarea and take up a free introductory consultation. Be clear about what you want or as clear as to you can be and note down how that Life Coach aims to help you? What are his/her methods of Coaching? And how will they measure your progress? Note down as much relevant information as possible before deciding to book an actual session.

Q: I’ve seen a Life Coach I would like to enlist however how do I know that they will really understand my problem and therefore help me?
A. The only way is to talk to them. There are many Life Coaches that alongside having the relevant qualifications are able to listen and reveal options to the client that they had not considered before. Some Coaches use intuition and can often see between the lines of what a client is explaining. With this in mind, they can openly challenge the clients’ limiting thoughts and turn them into positive ones. When coaching, I once had a client say ‘WOW’ as I had steered her towards a viable solution concerning her career.
Life Coaches have life experience so this often enables clients to feel as though they can relate (on some levels) to their Coach because they know what they are talking about.
