10 Tips for the best 2006 ever!
Article written by Samantha for Families Magazine

  1. Raise your self belief and confidence
As children and throughout adulthood we retain negative beliefs and comments which often prevent us from achieving our goals. It is therefore essential that you identify the negative beliefs and replace them with good ones. To ensure that the positive ones remain in your mind write them down, and repeat them as self affirmations until they sink in.

  2. Me time
Whether you are a busy working mum or not, create some ‘me’ time. You may be used to being a partner, mother, family member, trusted and dependable friend but you also have your own identity and sense of self which can easily be abandoned. So if you feel as though to you want to reclaim time for yourself, list all the activities you would like to do, and plan how and when they can be achieved.

  3. Keep your own counsel
Have you ever told someone you know your ambitions and goals when asked,
then feel deflated by their negative comments? It’s not necessarily that they wish to be unkind but their reactions have done nothing to encourage you. That may just be their mindset – but it need not be yours. It is therefore important that when you have goals you want to achieve for 2006, when asked about them, give a brief and general answer before moving on to a different topic. That way you don’t give someone the opportunity to pick it apart or make negative comments.

  4. Get specific!!!!
I have met people who want to change their lives and state that: “I want a business”, or “I’d like to have more money”, or “I would like to have a new job”. This doesn’t really tell me a lot so I probe by asking “Want sort of business do you want and why?” This leaves the person stumped as they have not considered this. That is why it is important to give thought to your goal and be as specific as possible. How else can you focus on achieving something if you don’t know what it is you want or why you want it?

  5. Enlist support and help
Once you have identified your goal, specified why you want it and how and when you will go about achieving it, you need help keeping motivated. It’s common to procrastinate, feel deflated, and lack confidence now and then. In order to keep motivated, focused and determined, you could contact a lifecoach who will support you every step of the way until your goal is achieved.

  6. Positive thinking
Whenever you come across a problem or setback, think of ways to overcome it. Pondering and agonising over a problem only makes it bigger and does your health and well being no good, but creating a solution actually diminishes the problem. Apply lateral thinking when seeking a solution and please do not become discouraged. Sometimes it’s helpful simply to say to yourself, “I’m going through this situation now, but it won’t be forever”.

  7. Go for it!
Do you find that fear and anxiety hold you back from embarking on something challenging and new? But by doing something new and challenging you will help raise your confidence and self worth. You will feel truly amazing when you look back and think to yourself, “Whatever did I have to fear/be anxious about?”

  8. Allowing your children to grow and become confident
“Be careful, you may hurt yourself”. “Don’t go to the shop with your friend’s something will happen to you”. Whilst we want to protect our children and ensure their safety, we also don’t want to wrap them in so much cotton wool that when they become adults, they are fearful of everything and everyone and lack gumption when needed. Yes, we should make them aware of the dangers out there but also encourage them to become confident individuals.

  9. Turning a new leaf for 2006!
Under each heading please specify the goals you want to achieve, in 2006 and how you will go about them. Set a realistic deadline for each one
A I plan to create some ‘me time’.
B I plan to enhance my relationship or to
    be in a relationship.
C I plan to spend more time/or create
    time with my friends.
    D I plan to have a fulfilling career/get the
    most from my existing job.
E I plan to make more time, or spend
quality time doing fun activities with my
    family.
F I plan to take up a hobby and learn a
new skill, doing something which I’ve
always wanted to do but haven’t had
    the chance until now.
    G I plan to exercise.
H I plan to give to charity.
You have the whole of 2006 to achieve
    the above, so get thinking!

  10. Looking and feeling good
Look at your self image. How do you carry yourself? How do you think others see you? Think about the type of person you want to be and work on yourself. Is there someone you admire because they are confident and self assured? If so, adopt their way of carrying themselves. Are you happy with the way you dress? Play the part of the characteristics you want. If you can perceive it, you can achieve it!
